Strength and Conditioning Coach, U.S. Ski Team 1987-1991M.O.V.E.!'s Big Picture Calendar for goal achievementWhat is your perspective on coaching?
Steve: With four decades of water training and teaching and coaching at every level of sport and degrees focused on physical fitness, I use the power of water for helping people return to full activity after injury, joint friendly/non-impact exercise and improved athletic performance.
You mentioned that you're using MOVE!.....how?
Steve: I've been using the Big Picture Calendar with clients and masters athletes. It's useful because whether you're pursuing physical fitness in order to age well or a sports goal, exercise takes a lot of time out of your day..Most of my clients have children, spouses, and jobs. Figuring out how to train so that your family doesn't get impacted negatively and so you are fit enough to compete successfully requires a lot of effort and planning.
Likewise, regular daily exercise also requires you to spend time on yourself and away from family and work. Whether pursuing sport or health related goals, you will need support and time. Planning ahead is essential. You have to consider everything going on in your life to set a realistic health and fitness or athletically related goal.
How do you use the Big Picture Calendar?
Steve: I often see people who have been injured and they want help coming back - and they always want to get back fast. Recently, a triathlete came to me with knee pain wanting deep water training. She had a son in high school and a husband. She worked part-time.
The Big Picture Calendar helps clients think about what's going on in the rest of their lives - athletic, personal, professional areas, etc.. People sometimes underestimate those commitments when they really want athletic goals. They want to do everything at the same time. I get that. We all want to accomplish as much as possible...and, who has patience? The Calendar helps you evaluate your obligations objectively... You can't do everything today. As the saying goes, you can do everything you want but not all at the same time.
And what I said to this client, after looking at her calendar, surprised her. (She wanted to return to competition yesterday.) Instead of telling her to train, I told her to wait, to focus on recovery and family. The Calendar helped us see how much she had going on already and her knee was not ready to train.
Six months later she went back to training. Her knee was healed. She returned to competition without problems within a year. She thanked me for the perspective.
